Heatwave harvest!

You’d think life on the plot would be slowing down this time of year, but not a chance! We’re all super busy, taking full advantage of this unusually hot weather.

Our poly tunnel crops are wrapping up, but we’re determined to have winter crops in there soon. So far, we’ve got spring onions, lamb’s lettuce, and pak choi. We plan to cover our new plot in cardboard and compost (no-dig style) over the winter. We’ve been collecting and de-taping cardboard donations in preparation.

Our curly kale seedlings faced some attacks in the greenhouse, so today we had a massive clear-out to remove unnecessary items and blitz the snails. We also planted meteor peas in the poly tunnel and red onion sets outside.

Our keen compost-sub group has been diligently cutting up our green waste, reorganizing, and layering our compost bays. The benefit is already showing—we have almost-ready compost that’s probably only two months old.

We’re coming to the end of our squash and courgette harvests, with a few ba offerings. Today, we managed a small but varied harvest of carrots, celery, squash, courgettes, spinach, tomatoes, and chilies. This 6kg donation to the Seaside community fridge brings our total to 1882kg this year—just 118kg away from 2 tonnes!
