Climate Resilient Garden: Planning Meeting

This week, our team gathered for the very first Climate Resilient Garden (CRG) planning session. Blessed by a sunny afternoon on the Kitchen Plot, we rolled up our sleeves and began shaping the exciting journey ahead.

We decided to start by trialling four innovative methods: keyhole gardening, hay bale beds, vertical growing, and hugelkultur beds. Each method will be explored by our assigned leads, who will research and share their findings at our next session on Monday.

A key action point from our meeting is to tap into the wealth of local knowledge. Through social media, we’ll invite residents with experience or expertise to visit us or join our weekly sessions. Our goal is to foster a collaborative, inclusive environment that inspires and empowers everyone involved.

We had an in-depth discussion on how to evaluate the trial beds, considering factors like material availability, cost, and climate resilience. While we acknowledge some challenges in maintaining scientific rigor, we agreed that recording and sharing our experiences will be invaluable. To better assess the impact of these methods, we’ll also establish comparison beds using our standard growing techniques.

We’re excited to test crops that are resilient to environmental stresses, including varieties we’ve never tried before. This aligns with our commitment to creating a garden adaptable to future challenges.

Seed saving has been on our Rooted agenda for a while. This project offers the perfect opportunity to dive deeper. As part of our sessions, every Monday we’ll focus on seed studies. We’ll document storage methods and observing flowers that attract pollinators.

The CRG team meets every Monday from 4–6 pm.

If you’d like to be part of this evolving and exciting project, please check out the CRG session pages and email Sally. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, no previous experience necessary. Just bring an open mind, a collaborative spirit, and perhaps some afternoon tea to share. Children are welcome to join the fun, too.  This isn’t a polished or rigid session – but it promises to be a hands-on creative and collaborative experience!

The goal of Blue Heart is to try out innovative ways to predict and mitigate the impact of flooding in Eastbourne and southern Wealden. This will benefit local people, businesses and the environment. What they learn will also help inform projects around the UK and beyond.
