Compost committee
Meet two-thirds of our fabulous compost committee! 🌱 They’ve revolutionised our composting process over the past few weeks, reducing our wait time to just a couple of months for lush, black compost that feeds our soil – and our soul too!
We ensure everything is finely cut and layered with green (fresh cuttings) and brown (cardboard and dead leaves) materials. Turning the compost every couple of weeks keeps things moving along nicely. When it’s time to sieve, we’ve discovered that a food crate with larger gaps works wonders, much better than the traditional compost sieves we used before.
Today, our freshly sieved compost was put to good use sowing lamb’s lettuce and Aquadulce broad beans in the greenhouse, and nourishing a bed in the polytunnel where we transplanted curly kale. We also direct-sowed broad beans outside as a cover crop to protect the soil and add nutrients.
